Computer Hard Drives

I am not going to go into all the different types of hard drives since this technology changes everyday, but I will give you a some general things that you should consider when choosing a computer hard drive.

Installation - If you are planning to install your new hard drive yourself, then choose a hard drive that is relatively easy to install.

Here are some tips as to what to look for:

  • Easy to follow instructions that you can understand, make sure the instructions are in a language that you can read.
  • Are there instructions that are written on paper, or only a cd disc, remember that if you only have one computer and you are trying to install the hard drive you will not be able to read the CD.
  • Is there telephone support that you can call if there is a problem? Do you have to pay for telephone support? Is call a local call or is it long distance or even overseas?
  • Is the telephone support service available hours that are convent for you to call? If the telephone support service is only available 9-5 and you are at work those hours, then they are not very helpful.
  • If you are planning to install a new hard drive on a older computer system then you have to make sure that the new hard drive is compatible with your older computer.

Size- Size is an important factor. The size of the computer hard drive that you should choose really depends of what you plan to store on your hard drive. A hard drive should be large enough to hold computer programs, data, pictures and music, games, movies, etc.

If you are planning to use your hard disc for storage, then you should consider buying a 2nd hard drive or an external hard drive. Computer hard drives don't have a very long life, and you don't want to loss important data, pictures etc. It is always a good idea to keep your important data on a backup drive.

Guarantee - When you buy a computer hard drive, it is important to look into the lenth of guarantee. If you have a problem with your hard drive, where do you have to bring your hard drive to be replaced or repaired. Is the repair servce located at a place that is convernnt for you to get to.

Price - Shop around for a good price. Check on the internet, newspapers, stores etc.

Return Policey - Find out before you buy a comptuer hard drive what is the return police. Find out what happens if you try to intall your hard drive and you have problems will the store assist you with the installation, if so how much will it cost for installation? and how long will it take them to install your computers hard drive.
